Buyouts, not lay-offs: Microsoft offers 60,000 staff a way out
In week 44 the AI job counter records 250 jobs cut, 25,000 job cuts announced and buyout offers to 60,000 employees.
The week's largest number is an offer, not a dismissal: Microsoft is offering about 60,000 employees a voluntary buyout. The Dutch government has announced about 25,000 fewer jobs in the central civil service, with AI one lever among several.
What happened
Microsoft (US, Canada, UK, India), 26 October: a voluntary buyout offer to about 60,000 staff in participating teams, roughly a quarter of the workforce, with a deadline in early December. Type: offered. AI link: context. Microsoft expects far fewer acceptances than the roughly 30 per cent who took its spring retirement offer, and says the offer does not signal a need for fewer employees; the backdrop is heavy cost pressure from spending on data centres and AI. Dutch government, 26 October: about 25,000 central civil-service jobs are to go over several years. Type: announced. AI link: partial. AI is one lever alongside scrapping 500 rules a year and using fewer external staff; the target is savings of €900m a year from 2027. Amazon (US), 28 October: about 250 jobs cut in the devices unit, mostly in software development, according to Reuters. Type: cut. AI link: context. Amazon confirmed a small number of roles without giving a figure and cited a review of its structure.
What follows
Assessment: in none of the three cases is AI the sole reason; twice it is part of the backdrop, once it is one of several levers. The week shifts the counter from finance to technology and the state. In week 43, Barclays, Generali Germany and Sunrise accounted for three announced programmes totalling 6,158 jobs in banking, insurance and telecoms, with no jobs cut and no offers. With the Netherlands, a government appears in the counter for the first time with cuts in which AI is named as a tool. No entry came from Germany, Austria or Switzerland this week. Whether the 60,000 offers turn into actual departures will only become clear after the early-December deadline.
What changes in practice
- Staff at tech groups
- At Microsoft, voluntary buyout offers are replacing dismissals for now. How many accept is open; the deadline runs to early December.
- Civil servants
- In the Netherlands about 25,000 central jobs are to go over several years, with police and defence exempt. AI is one of several levers.
- Software developers
- At Amazon, the cut of about 250 jobs mainly hit software development in the devices unit, according to Reuters.
What to watch
- Microsoft: how many of the roughly 60,000 staff accept the offer by early December
- Netherlands: which units are to shrink by 45 to 60 per cent
- Germany, Austria, Switzerland: whether more employers after Generali Germany and Sunrise cite AI in job cuts
