Half the ECB's top team leaves: new faces will set borrowing costs
The ECB held its deposit rate at 2.5 per cent on 29 October; hours earlier Christine Lagarde announced she will step down on 7 February 2027, about nine months before her term ends.
By the end of May 2027 three of the six seats on the ECB's Executive Board will change hands, while inflation stands at 3.8 per cent. Whoever follows will shape whether rates keep rising or the central bank waits longer.
What happened
The ECB left its key rates unchanged on 29 October, after increases in June and September. According to ORF, Austria's public broadcaster, Lagarde said the council had discussed a rise but decided unanimously to pause. Euro-area inflation was most recently 3.8 per cent, driven by energy prices. On the same day the ECB announced that Lagarde will leave on 7 February 2027; the bank gave no reason. According to Euronews, Lagarde said she wanted more freedom to express her views. Isabel Schnabel moves to the IMF on 3 January, and the term of Philip Lane, the chief economist, ends on 31 May. Half the board will thus change within five months. Euronews names Pablo Hernández de Cos, Klaas Knot and Joachim Nagel, president of the Bundesbank, as candidates for the top job. Assessment: the timing allows the succession to be settled before France's presidential election in April 2027. France's debt stands at 119 per cent of GDP, according to Reuters.
What follows
For savers and borrowers the stance matters more than the person. If the successor focuses on price stability, further rises become more likely; loans would stay dearer and overnight deposits would pay more. If the successor pays more attention to bond markets and heavily indebted states, the ECB may wait longer. Markets expect another rise in December if energy prices do not ease, according to Reuters. Until the appointments are settled, uncertainty about the rate path for 2027 increases. Companies planning floating-rate loans or refinancing next year are calculating against a moving target.
What changes in practice
- Borrowers
- The deposit rate stays at 2.5 per cent. If it rises in December, new loans become more expensive.
- Savers
- Deposit rates follow the policy rate. With inflation at 3.8 per cent, the real return on savings stays negative.
- Companies
- Until the new ECB leadership is in place, the rate path for 2027 is open. Financing becomes harder to plan.
